It’s Personal
In many of my paintings, I bring the subject close to you. It becomes a personal and intimate space. Some artists choose to tell people how bad life is through shocking images. Other artists want to give the public a respite. I understand that life can be tough. I also want people to be reminded of the beauty that surrounds them in simple every day things that they don’t notice. Nuances like how beautiful the light is when hitting common objects, like a bunch of tomatoes on your countertop. Oh how they cast gorgeous shadows! Helping people delight in things they haven’t noticed before is my desire.
The Magic of Realism
To me, realism is magic. Not only is the artist working with abstraction of design and color, but also with dimensionality. To create the illusion of depth and form on a flat surface is to observe, understand and recreate the physical aspects of light. Merely recreating an image is not art, it is technique. The artist must also include interpretation and passion into the work. The artist’s creativity must bring together the needed balance of technique and passion. Technique alone can be boring; passion alone can be chaos. The two together is magical. And with this magic, I am able to connect with the viewer. To tell them a story, ask them to delight in the wonder around them, to reveal who I am.
My Version of Success
I paint everything that is meaningful to me and my clients. I love when I show commissioned clients their painting and tears well up in their eyes. I think to myself, ‘You did it!’ And that is success for me.
